SPECIAL TOPIC: BAKING BREAD

  1. Flat stone
    1. build fire on stone
    2. remove coals
    3. place dough on hot stone and replace ashes
    4. when done remove ashes, Isa. 44:19; 1 Kgs. 19:6

  2. Bake on griddle
    1. made of clay or iron
    2. fire made in pit and griddle over pit
    3. dough made into flat cakes, Lev. 2:5,7; 6:20-21; 1 Chr. 23:29; 9:31; Ezek. 4:3

  3. Oven
    1. Type 1
      1. shaped like an overturned, earthen jar
      2. fire lit the night before
      3. ashes removed and dough baked on stones lining the bottom
    2. Type 2
      1. cylinder-shaped
      2. fire placed inside
      3. remove fire, use inside or outside surface to bake dough, Lev. 2:4

 Bread was made of wheat (more expensive) or barley (cheaper, eaten by the poor).
