SPECIAL TOPIC: CHEMOSH (Kemosh or Kamish)

This was the national deity of the Moabites. In Num. 21:29 and Jer. 48:46, Moab is called "the people of Chemosh." This deity is known much earlier in ancient Ebla deity lists.  In Jdg. 11:24 this deity is linked to Ammon. It seems that Chemosh gives land to people groups, similar to YHWH giving Canaan to Israel.

Solomon brought this cult into Jerusalem in 1 Kgs. 11:7,33; 2 Kgs. 23:13, on behalf of his young Canaanite wives.

The etymology of the name itself (BDB 484) is uncertain. Some scholars

  1. assume "destroyer" or "subduer" (he may have been a "war" god)
  2. link it to a "fish god"

Most of our information about this Canaanite deity comes from

  1. the Mesha Stele called "the Moabite Stone," written in 830 B.C., and discovered in 1868 A.D. at the city of Dibon
  2. the Hebrew Bible.

The text of 2 Kgs. 3:21-27 strongly suggests that Chemosh was worshiped with child sacrifice, as were Molech and Ba'al, two other Canaanite fertility gods.
