SPECIAL TOPIC: NEPHILIM (BDB 658, KB 709)

The identity of this group is related to its use in Genesis 6 (see SPECIAL TOPIC: sons of God in Genesis 6). It is often translated “giants” in the LXX, probably from Num. 13:33 and its characterization as “the sons of Anak” (BDB 778 I, KB 859 II).

It is possible that this root is related to the VERB “fall” (BDB 656), which could refer to

  1. a fall from heaven (i.e., angels)
  2. a fall into sin (i.e., tyrants of the period, cf. Genesis 4).
